GUF-GADUD (Sh.M.Network) — Somalia’s Al shabaab militants on Saturday afternoon have launched an ambush heavy attack on Somali forces in Bay region in north-western Somalia, reports said.
Al shabaab are said to have ambushed government forces stationed at the village of Gof-gadud located on the outskirts of Baidoa city, some 256 kilometres (159 miles) northwest of the capital Mogadishu, reports said.
A witness said At least two persons, all the combatants, were killed and dozens more injured during the confrontation there.
Mahad Abdirahman, the police boss of Bay region, told the independent Shabelle Media station in Mogadishu that Somali forces came under attack. He noted they repulsed their apposing fighters.
“Al-Qaeda-inspired insurgents attacked the barracks of Somali government at Gof-gadud area near Baidoa town on Saturday night. The forces fought back and inflicted heavy casualties upon the militants during the combat, he added.
Al shabaab has not released any comments about the fighting and its consequences.
