Somalia: Gunmen assassinate Somali official in Baidoa

BAIDOA (Sh.M.Network)—Unknown armed groups have on Sunday assassinated a senior Somali government official in Somalia’s third largest city of Baidoa, located just 250 Km (159 miles) northwest of Mogadishu, reports said.

Three masked assailants armed with pistols have shot to death Muqtar Qasim, a worker for the government tax office in Baidoa town after leaving mosque and on his way to home, according to witnesses.

“May Allah mercy on him. He was killed by three gunmen belonging to Al Qaeda-linked Al shabab this morning, who escaped the scene after the shooting and security forces arrived,”Governor for Bay region told Shabelle Media Network station in Mogadishu by phone.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the assassination.

Baidoa, former seat of Somalia’s interim government, was captured by Somali and Ethiopian forces On February 22, 2012 from Al shabab, with encountering a fight.
