Somali, AU forces battle Al shabab near Kimsayo

KISMAYO (Sh.M.Network)—Heavy fighting, with air and beach shelling between Somali government soldiers backed by Kenyan AMISOM forces is going on the suburbs of Somalia’s southern port city of Kismayo, the largest key town  held by Al shabab militants, reports said.

Local residents who requested anonymity told Shabelle Media Network by phone that situations is tense as both rival forces are reinforcing their battle frontlines in south and west of the city, forcing all business activities and public movement to bring to a standstill.

“So far I can confirm you that at least three civilians were injured in the latest bombardment of Kenyan air and naval forces on Kismayo” a resident told Shabelle Media Network based in Mogadishu.

Sources say defensive Checkpoints were set up on the main road leading to the north of Kismayo part by Al shabab fighters to defend the city from the allied forces to move in.

More than 10 combatants from both warring sides have been killed the combat for Kismayo.

Early on Friday, Kenyan military spokesman Col Cyrus Oguna told the media that half of Kismayo had been captured and the rest was expected to fall soon.
