KISMAYO (Sh. M. Network)— The military officials of Somali government on Saturday claimed major victory over bloody fighting with Al shabaab, which declared merger with Al Qaeda early this year.

In an exclusive interview with Shabelle Media Network, Ismail Sahar-diid, Somali army commander inLower Jubbaregion said that the government forces managed to destroy a battlewagon carrying weapons and fighters belonging to Al shabab during yesterday’s fighting near Kismayo city.

He added that the coalition forces [AMISOM and Somali] are approaching the port city Kismayo, where Al shabaab tightly controls.

“You can see government forces are today in control of most areas around Kismayo, a nerve centre for the militants located just 500 Km south of Mogadishu that were being fought over in the past three months,” he said.

Al shabab did not say any word yet about the Somali military claim.

The fighting on Friday was the heaviest in the last few weeks.
