Slain Shabelle journalist laid to rest

MOGADISHU (Sh.M.Network)—Hundreds of mourners stood in the noon heat at Jazeera cemetery in Mogadishu Monday to offer their final respects to Shabelle Media journalist Mohamed Mohamud Turyare who died in Madina Hospital on Sunday night after suffering gunshot wounds.

The burial event was attended by members of Mohamed Mohamud’s family, friends and fellow journalists, as the atmosphere at the Jazeera cemetery was somber mood.

Late Mr. Turyare, 22, was seriously wounded on October 21, 2012 by two unknown assailants in front of his house at Hawo Tako neighborhood in Mogadihsu’s Wadajir district and admitted at Madine Hospital and his wounds were not considered to be life-threatening over the last seven days.

The journalist who was a hard-working producer and webmaster for Shabelle Media Network, was attacked on 21 October as he was on his way to his home at Hawo Tako, after returning from a chemist, where he was buying tablets.

Mohamud is the 17th killed this year alone in 2012. It is a part of the risk of journalists working in hostile environments that journalists operate in Somalia.
