New EU envoy lands in Mogadishu, hands over his credentials to president

MOGADISHU (Sh.M.Network)—The president of Somalia’s Federal Republic government Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has on Saturday officially received the credential letters of a new EU envoy to Somalia.

After a meeting at the presidential palace on Saturday, Michele Cervone d’Urso, the new EU ambassador to Somalia handed over his credentials to Somalia president, a move that EU intends of boost its diplomatic ties to Somalia.

Abdullah Hajji Hassan, the outgoing Somali foreign minister has told reporters at the state house, Villa Somalia after meeting of Somali president and EU envoy that Michele Cervone d’Urso is the first European Union envoy to Somalia for more than 20 years.

“I’m very happy today to hand over my credentials over Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as new EU ambassador to Somalia since the collapse of former military rule led by Mohamed Siad barre in 1991,” The envoy said, adding that EU is committed to help Somalia to get back to its glorious days.

Improving security situation has made possible the western and others countries to establish embassies in Mogadishu, Somalia capital after Al shabab pulled out of the city in August 6,last year following offensives by Somali National Army (SNA) backed by UN-authorized African Union peacekeeping forces.
