Govt forces exchange gunfire inLower Shabelle province

AFGOYE (Sh.M.Network)—Forces in Somali government have on Wednesday exchanged heavy gun-battle in Lower Shabelle region, north-west Mogadishu, reports said.

The clashes sparked after patrol forces tried on Wednesday to remove an illegal roadblock occupied by another government soldiers in the recently secured town ofLambar-konton(km50), once Al shabab stronghold area.

Local residents told the independent Shabelle Media Network station by phone that the fighting was fierce and raged on for several hours in the day, leaving dozens of combatants injured.

The exact figures of the casualties are still unclear.

Ahmed Omar, a government official in the region confirmed the fighting to Shabelle Media Network, but did state the amount of losses in the conflict.

Somali, AU forces have just expanded their operation area beyondMogadishu, capturing many key strategic towns controlled by Al shabab for three years in the past.

Despite Al shabab lost its strongholds, attacks and clashes against the allied forces are still frequent in the region.
