AFGOYE (Sh.M.Network)—An official in Somali government says a suicide bomber has exploded his explosive belt at Somali army base in Afgoye, a town just thirty kilometres away from north-west of Mogadishu.
Mohamud Omar, the deputy governor for lower Shabelle province, confirmed that a bomber walked into Bar Ismail checkpoint on Saturday at about 1:15 p.m. local time, killing himself.
“The bomber went off before he reached his target but the blast didn’t harm anyone,” he added.
Al shabab militants have immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, saying one of their fighters has carried out the blast.
Somali security forces have cordoned off the area, halting temporarily the public movement and vehicles, according to the witnesses.
The blast has shattered the relative calm of Afgoye, which was taken back from Shebab by Somali and African Union troops area after a week long operation in May, 2012.
